Project: Leidarhofdi Community Center
Award: Future projects – Civic, Bronze, 2022
Location: Hofn, Iceland
Architect: sastudio + hjark + landmotun
Client: Hornafjörður Municipality
This multi-purpose community hall has been designed to complement its stunning waterfront setting on Iceland’s coastline, rising gently from the ground towards the town. It generates a new street front and shields the new plaza from dominant north east winds while opening its footprint to maximize sun exposure.
The green roof extends the local flora and becomes an extension of the pedestrian promenade, offering a new point of view over the town and surrounding nature.
The building is a versatile multi-purpose space that can adjust to different uses for locals and visitors. The design promotes awareness and respect for the environment and is conceived to be energy efficient.
Design highlights
An analysis of historic photos revealed a drop in the topography where rainwater once accumulated. The designers propose to bring back this wetland with a variety of year-round attractions including a pond in warmer months, and an ice-skating rink in the colder ones. A variety of recreation areas made of locally sourced larch frames and recycled fishing gear are spread along the site for different purposes including playgrounds, educational facilities and sports activities.
