Geometric culture centre inspired by fibonacci

“Striking building with bold geometry and interesting integration of water,” Andrew Best, Judge

Project: OCT Jining Grand Canal Culture & Art Center

Award: Leisure, Silver, 2023

Location: Jining, China

Architects: CCTN Design

Client: OCT Jining Grand Canal Culture & Art Center

Set next to the city canal, OCT Jining Grand Canal Culture & Art Center’s inverted cone design has been inspired by a spiral line derived from the Fibonacci numbers. Throughout, its designers have aimed to create a dialogue between the building’s contemporary urban texture and the surrounding water.

Set above a striking but simple water feature, the building rises from the ground in the northwest corner, turning by 270 degrees and reaching its highest point facing the river westward.

A counter-clockwise sightseeing route follows the river with tourists entering via the foyer and gradually ascending over the water. Linear low windows, roof light collectors, west facing windows and light filled courtyards mean the interior light changes constantly. Linear low windows introduce cool air from the surface of the water into the room through air guide grooves while roof light collectors pull out the hot air.

Design highlights

The facade uses artificial reclaimed stone slotted panels made from mine waste stone powder, stone slag and construction waste, dramatically reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the construction process.

A floor to ceiling glass curtain wall in the second exhibition area on the second floor maximises views over the canal.
