Project: PENN 2
Award: Future Projects - Commercial, Gold, 2023
Location: New York, United States
Architect: MdeAS Architects
Client: Vornado Realty Trust
The 1.75 million square foot restoration of PENN 2 is intended to breathe new life into the gateway of Seventh Avenue atop the busiest transportation hub in North America. The office building that replaced the original Pennsylvania Station lacked a connection to the city. The new Seventh Avenue frontage will feature an iconic raised addition perched 50 feet above the plaza supported by robust slanting columns that rest upon the original station’s foundations. The underside of the podium will be clad with LED-backed perforated metal panels, creating an immersive light installation.
Inside, a public café and balcony will be perched within the triple height volume, along with a private second floor lounge and terrace. Additional amenities will include a 280-person town hall and pre-function space, as well as 75,000 square feet of new outdoor space, including a 17,000 square foot roof park supported by a multi-functional roof pavilion.
