Xianyang Weicheng Middle School by Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University is an entry in the transport category of the 2023 WAN Awards

Located in the centre of Xianyang City, the school provides a high-standard learning/living environment for over 3,600 students and 300 teachers and staff. The new campus is built on a site that was previously a textile factory with an irregular shape and a complex surrounding environment. We aim to build a fully functional modern campus with respect to industrial history and integrate it into the urbanization process.

The school, established in 1955, will occupy a 7.17-hectare portion of the factory site, featuring 72 classrooms, dormitories, canteens, and other facilities, with a total construction area of 94,500 square metres. The site itself holds rich natural and cultural significance. By utilizing traditional axis techniques, the design uses two axes to connect buildings from different eras.

The architectural design strategy emphasizes creating a cohesive teaching area where corridors and main buildings blend seamlessly, fostering spontaneous interactions. The design focuses on preserving industrial building renovation to continue the site's character, also applying structural innovations and eco-friendly techniques to create more comfortable environments. Xianyang Weicheng Middle School aims to integrate regional characteristics and cultural heritage into its design, offering a contemporary and historical blend
