Industrial homes inspired by nature

“An ingenious and striking solution to improve the personal environment for industrial workers,” Adam Tither, Judge

Project: THE OASIS

Award: Future Projects - Residential, Gold, 2023

Location: Shanghai, China

Architect: JZFZ Architectural Design Co., Ltd.

Set in one of Shanghai’s new industrial areas, the Oasis aims to provide attractive affordable housing for at least 1,000 factory workers employed nearby. The design breaks away from conventional cold, centralized dormitory buildings, by developing comfortable new residential structures inspired by the poriferous structures in nature. The result is intended to be a new “oasis” teeming with life. The prefabricated modules are small but the use of space, connection to natural light, planting and access to private external balconies gives the illusion of a much larger home.

Design highlights

A round landscaped atrium in each building will connect five modules that serve as ancillary facilities. Prefabricated and modular community facilities will be scattered across the “oasis” like waterdrops that imbue vitality to the community. The design of the independent cabins, which will each have a private balcony, has been informed by research into the mental health and living habits of the target residents.
