Project: Reconstruction of Beijing Workers' Stadium
Award: Leisure, Bronze, 2023
Location: Beijing, China
Architect: Beijing Institute of Architectural Design
Client: Chinese Football Association
The reconstruction of the Workers' Stadium retains the original’s classic shape and facade form using fair-faced concrete – a smoother, lighter and more attractive alternative to traditional concrete.
It reduces construction waste by eliminating the process of secondary exterior and interior decoration and resists oxidation and corrosion meaning the facade does not need to be overhauled during the building’s life cycle. In addition, its minimalist appearance also reminds people of the style of the old Workers' Stadium.
Featuring a professional football field and sports complex covered by an urban green park, 69% of the building area is located underground. A number of themed commercial spaces include brand flagship stores, while events and art performance space are also on offer.
Design highlights
The new canopy can cover all the spectator seats, improving the venue's ability to hold games in extreme weather and the spectators’ game watching experience. It integrates the functions of shading, lighting, water drainage, snow melting, photovoltaic power generation, sound absorption and noise reduction. The polycarbonate sheets it is made from utilize light wavelength control UV technology, which allow light beneficial to the growth of grass into the site.
