Project: Shanshui Firewood Garden

Award: Multi Use, Gold, 2023

Location: Sichuan, China

Architect: Mix Architecture

Client: Chengdu Jinda Jiajin Cultural Tourism Co., Ltd

Located in a village in western Sichuan in China, the Shanshui Firewood Garden is inspired by traditional Sichuan dwellings which often feature natural wood and low roofs. The exterior walls of the building are made of local materials including woven bamboo and mud, complemented by the surrounding ponds. The lower part is built with red sandstone blocks on a masonry foundation.

Design highlights

Traditional Sichuan homes also often feature a courtyard space. Here the arc-shaped inner courtyard is arranged around a peaceful circular pool.
Red sandstone, originating from the mountains of Sichuan, is also a commonly used material for architecture, sculpture and household appliances in the area. The building is built with machine-cut red sandstone blocks in the shape of fish scales and pieces of the local firewood in a range of different sizes.
