Project: Eastern Creek Quarter Stage 1
Award: Materials - Concrete in Architecture, Silver, 2022
Location: Sydney, Australia
Architect: i2C Architects
Client: Frasers Property Australia
Eastern Creek Quarter Neighbourhood Shopping Centre is a distinctive shopping centre in the Sydney suburbs using sculptural concrete to reflect the local culture and nature which surrounds it. Its biophilic architectural skin is composed of uniquely designed precast concrete panels called dynowave. These are matched with a random arrangement of seamed metal panels of varying sheens - all inspired by the dynamic flow of water in the local creek.
Inside a strip of roof sky lights allow natural daylight to add drama to the concrete panels internally. The concrete panels were fabricated offsite and delivered during construction, minimising air and noise pollution.
Design highlights
The colour of the concrete was carefully considered, with Nawkaw masonry staining used to penetrate through the concrete and give the panels a natural look which required less maintenance.
The 3D curvilinear form of the detail complements other building materials used in the project such as metal and timber, as well as providing a good contrast with surrounding plants. The textured concrete is as striking when lit by strong natural light during the day as it is when illuminated by LED lighting at night.
