Award: Future Projects – Education, Silver, 2022
Location: Shenzhen, China

Client: Shenzhen Longhua Qingquan Foreign Language Junior School
This new junior school will be set in south eastern China’s Shenzhen, a rapidly growing city where land to build is scarce and there’s a rapidly growing population in need of new schools. Its "Green Valley Campus" aims to maximise the tight site by building up and down and to create an interesting educational setting, surrounded by nature.
A continuous roof garden will be organically connected with the playground space while a "Valley Garden" is formed between the north and south buildings to create a landscape of green slopes. Meanwhile there is an elevated athletics ground beneath which large spaces such as a canteen, a theatre, swimming pool and basketball court are ingeniously placed. There will also be indoor courts here to provide children with sports venues on rainy days.
Design highlights
The green valley will feature a series of interesting small spaces such as corridors, platforms, cabins and caves, for children to play and enjoy themselves outside. In order to connect the east and west campuses, a bridge at the entrance of the campuses is designed to connect the primary school and the junior high school. The overhanging entrance is used to create a communal space that works as a waiting area for parents to drop off and pick up their children.
