Iconic exhibition centre embraces lakeside setting

“This project is a wonderful example of how architecture and nature can blend into one,” Marta Galinanes-Garcia, Judge

Project: Yinchuan Sunac City Exhibition Centre

Location: Yinchuan, China

Award: Waterfront, Gold, 2022

Architect: Arch-Age-Design(AAD)

Client: Sunac Beijing Regional Group (Yinchuan Branch)

Sitting peacefully at the entrance to Gedi Lake Park in Yinchuan, North West China, theYinchuan Sunac City Exhibition Centre is designed to resemble a strand of silk floating on the water. Its simple and elegant crescent moon shape hugs the lakeside. The roof is slanted towards the surface of the lake and appears to be hovering above the water’s edge. The transparent glass curtain wall on the façade facing the lake means the building appears to be an organic part of the park landscape and is designed to blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside, as well as allowing visitors wonderful views of the lake and park. In the future the exhibition and sales centre will become a community civic centre. Local people already enjoy visiting – from young families, to the elderly who practice tai chi here in the mornings.

Design highlights

A perforated curtain wall has a pattern inspired by Malan flowers, Yinchuan’s city flower, and curved lines that gracefully echo the ripples of the lake.
