Futuristic arts centre offers infinite appeal

“Stunning and ephemeral design, futuristic and elegant. Blending in beautifully with its surrounding context,” Sofia Hagen, Judge.

Project: Zhuhai Culture and Art Centre

Award: Future Projects – Civic, Gold, 2022

Location: Yinkeng Peninsula, Zhuhai, China

Architect: Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University

Set on the picturesque Yinkeng Peninsula with both the sea and mountains as back drop, the Zhuhai Culture and Art Centre is set to form part of the wider redevelopment of this waterfront area of the city. Its striking figure of eight design is intended to symbolise the intertwined, infinite loop shape of the Mobius ring. The designers explain that this simple but powerful shape is intended to represent the enduring cultural heritage of the coastal city in which the centre is located.
The building will include an 800-seat theatre, a cultural centre, exhibition space and library. Inside, a vast forest atrium and sea-viewing platform will maximise views of the stunning setting and bring the outside in.

Design highlights

The undulating form and free flowing space inside the Mobius ring elegantly chimes with the surrounding mountains and sea as do the curving natural walkways. The centre will feature semi-underground parking, while the primary road across the peninsula is set to be partially underground in order to keep the public space pedestrian friendly.
