Located in Xindu District, Chengdu, the project is composed of 3200-seat gymnasium, 1500-seat swimming venue, and public fitness center, completed in March 2021, with a GFA of about 86,000 sq m. As a district-level sports center, it fulfills the demands of sporting events, fitness, leisure and recreation, supplementing urban functions of Xindu District.
From the perspective of the city, gymnasium and swimming venue are combined in one building and arranged along Raocheng Blvd. With a distinctive appearance, the conjoined building becomes a prominent urban landmark.
Gymnasium and swimming venue share many resources like square, parking facility, green landscapes, outdoor space, and main equipments, responding to sustainable green building initiatives of saving land, investment and energy.
Facades of the conjoined building mainly employ glass curtain walls, aluminum honeycomb panels, and sun-shading aluminum plates. The standardized sun-shading plate units adopt the assembled curtain wall system to create a free curved architectural form, resolving the conflict between complex form and construction economy as well as rationality. Structural nodes are adjustable in angles, producing a rhythmic facade effect full of rich lights and shadows while echoing the local culture.
Based on requirements for size and net height, interior spaces are organized with a three-dimensional consideration, convenient for sporting events organization and daily operation. In addition to sports competition function, the design also takes full account of daily operational needs, with various sports spaces and industrial spaces that offer public services of fitness, leisure and entertainment arranged around the sunken square or above the audience lounge.
