Opened in June 2021, The Langham Boston underwent a transformation of the lobby, meeting and event spaces, guestrooms, and the addition of a new bar, restaurant and club.
The brief had several goals; to create a strong sense of The Langham brand enhancing the brand’s presence in North America, to reconfigure the inefficient layout and to restore and retain the historical character of the building, whilst considering the building’s location.
The original layout was not functionally efficient with several spaces without access and ADA requirements not met. Reconfiguring and reimagining the spaces to flow as a hotel ensuring access constraints were eliminated, had to be overcome.
Retaining the historical character of the building was central to the brief and was considered throughout the design process. The building was constructed in 1922 in the Renaissance Revival style to house the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Originally designed facing inwards, the building’s strong plinth and narrow windows promoted security and privacy for banking duties. Now a hotel, the hotel is warm and inviting with a classic and sophisticated design synonymous with The Langham brand.
Ensuring Richmond’s commitment to sustainability was consistent throughout the design process for The Langham, Boston whilst always maintaining high quality, the studio appointed local timber suppliers who provided the American Black Walnut and Birch for the joinery. The FF&E manufactures were based in Canada, again reducing travelling miles. The artwork was specifically selected to not only celebrate Boston, but to support and promote local artists.
