The Lake House on Canandaigua in NY

Studio Tack and The Brooklyn Home Company collaborated to design a retreat welcoming all generations in the Finger Lakes region

by Georgina Johnston 24 November 2021

The Lake House, a groundup, multi-building property, is a Sands family independently-owned hotel located on the North end of Canandaigua Lake. Envisioned by The Brooklyn Home Company, led by brother-sister developer Bill Caleo, designer Lyndsay Caleo Karol and her artist husband Fitzhugh Karol, the hotel opened in August 2020.

The development of the hotel was led by Caleo and Doug Bennett, the grandchildren of Marvin and Mickey Sands, founders of the Canandaigua Wine Company. Formerly a motor lodge owned by the Sands family, The Lake House offers a residentially inspired and design-forward hotel, creating a new destination for those seeking an active wellness retreat in western New York.

With 125 guest rooms and suites, there is a timber frame event barn, a pool and year-round hot tub, a wellness centre, and boardwalk for water sports. Both casual and fine dining options are located on the property, including its signature restaurant Rose Tavern and re-imagined Sand Bar.
