An integrated team including Design, Urban Design, Healthcare Planning, Research, Advisory, and Design Green collaborated with the Piedmont Steering Committee and user groups to craft a vision around the idea of creating an Iconic Health Destination that serves as a threshold for care, community engagement, commercial / residential / institutional uses, and the internal and external communities it serves. More than 1,000 people - including patients, staff, neighbors, and expansion leadership—provided input on the project vision through workshops and advisory meetings.
A threshold acknowledges that there is a transition from one space to another while allowing passage / exchange. The Marcus tower project created a transparent facade and an active ground floor that engages the public realm and commercial corridor with landscaped plazas set up for events and well being, a community auditorium, and a cafe with outdoor seating.
Marcus Tower and the surrounding site has been a catalytic addition to the Piedmont campus and the public realm along Peachtree and the intersection at Collier. The project has exploited its accessibility by arterial and connector roads, its adjacency to a sophisticated commercial district and tight knit residential neighborhoods, and its proximity to Atlanta’s biggest rehabilitation movement, the Beltline, and underlines its importance as a Threshold project to link, engage, interact / participate, and contribute.
The transparency and activation of the ground floor, plaza and site has created an incredible area of respite, wellness, education, expression of Piedmont Values and service, and a local pride that was much needed in the surrounding chaos.
