Hospitals and clinics: design for healing

Entries give global insight into medical facilities

The American International Hospital (AIH) is one of the first hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, designed and operated to American hospital standards. With its capacity of 120 beds on 10 storeys, AIH is equipped with modern medical facilities. The interiors bridge the blurred boundary between medical space and a luxury hotel’s experience, replicating the latter’s positive effects to improve the psychology of patients and promoting healing and recovery for the body. The elegant interiors decorate the welcome lounges and private suites, with the influence of nature from the hospital’s surrounding area apparent throughout the design.

Situated within a rapidly developing neighborhood in San Francisco’s financial district, Studio Dental’s brick and mortar location is defined by a modern aesthetic, while honoring the historic elements of the base building. A conceptual ‘lantern’ within the dark building core communicates a volumetric sense of scale, luminescence, and transparency to serve as the framework for a series of operatories within. The lantern wall panels that light up the interior are visually expanded through strategically located smoked mirrors and glow through the glazed facade to illuminate the sidewalk beyond.

Thonburi Healthcare Group Public Company Limited invested B750 million in converting an existing shopping mall located in Bangkok, Thailand into a high-end specialty hospital with cutting edge medical services. The Thonburi-Bamrungmuang Hospital now serves the community in an old area of Bangkok, opening in January 2019. The unique conversion to contain specialty clinics on the first and second floors total 9,458 sqm. and space for future expansion. Light and clean interiors welcome patients to the healthcare facilities with a luxurious double volume lobby. Sculptured lighting shines through perspex leaves above the reception.

The Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) redevelopment involved the construction of a new 7 storey patient care tower consisting of 400,000 square feet and 172 beds, as well as 120,000 square feet of renovations to the existing buildings.

Within the new patient care tower are, 3 floors of medical surgical inpatient units, Intensive Care, Surgical Services programs - including Ambulatory Procedures - the Medical Day Care / Oncology Program, Emergency Department, Laboratories, and other public amenities. Renovations of clinical departments include Diagnostic Imaging, Ambulatory Care Clinics, Level 2B Nursery, Paediatric and Postpartum Inpatient Units.
