Yan’an Learning Academy - Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University Co.,Ltd is an entry in the Civic category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

The Project is located on a small mountain at the northwest corner of Yan'an New Area, Shaanxi Province. We are assigned to design a viewing tower at the cone-shaped hilltop as a symbol of the new area and the Owner’s achievements. Yet we stress on restoring eco-environment with systematic engineering means, and reshaping the sustainable development relation among building, environment and human needs, for the fragile eco-environment.

Site surveys show exposed loess, alkaline soils, and frequent geological disasters. Out of the responsibility of being an architect, we creatively propose to render a city parlor for Yan’an people and visitors to rest, communicate and take part in public activities, by restoring the mountain ecology, constructing mountain parks with self-recycling capability and accommodating functional demands of parking and sightseeing. We ultimately convince the Owner. Now the Project has emerged as a landmark of Yan’an New Area favored by the public.

The design intends to establish an ecologically self-recycling system, so we apply fish scale pit planting, decomposed sheep dung and ferrous sulfate to improve soil quality, prevent soil consolidation and enhance fertilizer efficiency. We design a rainwater storage system for secondary utilization, avoiding soil erosion and loess collapse, and employ intelligent water-saving irrigation for a low-cost maintenance of plants.

By applying the semi-subsidence layout commonly seen in traditional kilns houses, the building can adapt to the locally strong sunshine and bitter north wind. Meanwhile, the building is integrated into the environment through the undulating roofs and see-through courtyards.
