Visions into the future

These entries for this year’s WAN Awards are all looking forward; highlighting some spectacular visions for communities worldwide.

Shenzhen Longhua Archive Library - Cultural Architecture, an entry in the Future Projects - Civic category is located in the north of the Shenzhen Longhua Guanlan Cultural and Art Center. The two narrow sites are connected with a bridge over a public road running in the middle and are of different heights to avoid an overlooking issue. The greatest challenge Atelier Global faced in designing the library was finding the balance between security and the openness of the building whilst working with the urban context to provide flexible spaces for diverse cultural possibilities in the future.

An entry in the Future Projects - Leisure category, VillaVOON from Strohecker Architects was initiated as a research project with the basic idea to build a fully ecological and sustainable dwelling unit out of a single material, wood. It is aimed at providing a biologically sound alternative to holiday residences in the luxury segment. The complete production as well as the assembly process are done in accordance with strict ‘green building’ specifications and no chemical adhesives, synthetic building materials or metal parts are used.

When FGMF Architects started the Nortis POD Building project, they wanted something really new in the landscape, with the strength that the Pinheiros neighborhood has and deserves. Some 127 residential units with one parking space each, distributed from the 4th to the 23rd floor of the building. This project is an entry in the Future Projects: Mixed Use category.

GN (Shanghai) Architecture Design Office Co. Limited’s work on the design of an Activity and Service Centre of a Continuing Care Retirement Community is an entry in the Future Project - Mixed Use category. It features a dynamic Hub, built to provide spaces for sports, cultural activities and catering and shopping.  The hub is expected to encourage senior citizens to communicate and share time with each other. Efficient transportation connections crossing through the different functional boxes will make it easy for residents to move between activities.
