Citystars - Galaxy of Life - Concept i is an entry in the Future Projects - Commercial category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

In 2018 Concept i was commissioned for the renovation and expansion design of Citystars, Cairo. The 15 year old project was Egypt’s first mixed-use development with over 750,000 m2 and $US 1.5 billion investment.

The “makeover” relates to 250,000 m2 (Retail GFA) including architecture, interiors, lighting, way-finding, digital media and landscape. Total budget is Interior US $55M Exterior $35M, targeting completion end of 2023.

Over 25,000 m2 of new retail space is created, fundamental to the project feasibility. Under the theme “Galaxy of Life” vibrant new leisure, F&B, event and public spaces are created including;

Galaxia: 4 Levels of F&B and Lake/Media Show
Orion: 8 story Digital Fountain Atrium
Starport: Solar Ship Colonnade
Spectrum: Grand Pyramid - a Galactical Prism
Nova: New Anchor Space
Eclipse and Solaris: 2 Atriums with Nile Themes
Horizon Terrace: Multi-purpose, Rooftop Event Space

The new interiors express the relaxing fluidity of the Nile, with soft, sandy tones and sinuous lines. Exterior facades are fluid and transparent with soaring shade canopies pronouncing entrances. Materials are sourced locally.

MEP systems are updated for efficiency including lighting, a/c, water and power conservation. A “pool” of digital themes and experiences feed all public spaces, choreographed to create ever changing visual character and content.

As Citystars repositions in line with global trends, it is the context, scale and fusion of new design and technology that makes the project genuinely innovative. The owners show a bold commitment to the people of Egypt with this inspiring social, cultural and leisure development.
