The Amazon HQ2 competition began in 2017 with great fanfare, ending in November 2018. Over 238 cities responded to the submission shortlisted to 20 cities in the largest headquarters competition on record.
Collaborating with our client, Hunt Consolidated Inc. HKS Architects developed this bespoke Amazon HQ2 proposal located in downtown Dallas, TX.
The HKS Amazon HQ2 vision was an urban catalyst response to a redevelopment need within an underutilized area of Dallas to enable beneficial uplift to surrounding neighborhoods. The (+5 Billion USD) development over a 52 acre site, contains 24 million sf of total built area including 8 million sf of HQ2 office for 50,000 employees within a 16hr/day mixed-use & residential environment.
This landmark project would become the new pedestrian gateway to the bucolic Trinity River corridor while redefining the Dallas skyline. The primary goals were to achieve Connectivity to the larger community through onsite access to Multi-mode Transportation infrastructure – exemplifying Transit Oriented Design, (reducing parking by 50%), Urban Walkability, integrated Sustainable Strategies and public access to Green space and public event areas.
The HQ2 building design was informed by the scalable logistics of Amazon operations & ethos and expressed through the formal exploration of a neo-rational modular grid.
The hive-like HQ2 grid became the conceptual and structural diagram used to express the adaptable and expanding business model within the global Amazon framework.
Modular prefabrication was explored as a quick-ship construction strategy to add to the Day 1 program, for ongoing future expansion through future phases of development.
