The Research and Development Centre lies at the heart of the new corporate site of the carmaker Chang’an. The new building is located at a central position on a landscape axis, which crosses the extensive factory premises from east to west in the central Chinese district of Yuzui. Due to its location and prominent frontal position, the Research and Development Centre stands out from the surrounding production buildings and becomes a landmark for the entire company premises. The building’s shape follows a traditional Chinese typology, with a plinth area and overhanging roof. The façade is divided into two horizontal layers which span the floors. The upper floors project out like a pulpit over a length of 9 meter. The floor areas in the five-stories building with quadratic floor plan are distributed around a central inner courtyard. The individual research facilities and offices are connected by a multi-functional central access zone with a café, exhibition room and library. A diagonal corridor crosses the square inner courtyard, leading the landscape axis through the building and up to the higher-level Design Centre.
