2019 WIN Awards: x+why, People's Mission Hall - Squire & Partners

27 Jun 2019

x+why, People's Mission Hall - Squire & Partners is an entry in the Studios, co-working spaces and home office category at the 2019 World Interiors News Awards.

x+why, People’s Mission Hall in Whitechapel is the first coworking space by x+why, launched in 2019 with the aim of delivering a series of spaces which unite purpose-driven businesses.

The site has a long history of philanthropy, community and social action, and was the original location for the Salvation Army Mission Hall, later becoming the Salvation HQ. This historical significance led the client to reinstate the building as ‘People’s Mission Hall’. A refurbishment of the existing buildings and a modern addition were completed in 2018 by Rivington Street Studio.

Within this shell, Squire & Partners and its sister branding agency, Mammal, developed a concept for x+why’s first workspace, creating an identity and design aesthetic true to its values.

The five-storey building delivers over 22,500 sq. ft. of creative working environments that reflect the client’s perception of coworking: a place that fosters greater purpose.

Inspiration was taken from the history of tanneries and local markets in Whitechapel, as well as its more recent reincarnation as a place for the arts with a unique mix of cultures and traditions.

Designs offset robust materials and raw finishes with a layer of comfortable seating, rugs and freestanding furniture pieces to invoke a domestic and social atmosphere. Natural greenery, artwork and vintage pieces from nearby markets are also a key element of the workspace’s character.

Two months after launching the space was 80% let, with tenants who underpin x+why’s ‘purpose driven business’ mission including: MuslimGiving, LIVI, The London Interdisciplinary School and B Corp.
