Hong Kong West Kowloon Station - Aedas is an entry in the Sustainable buildings category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

The station's sweeping roof design encourages people to walk up the gentle paths to the top, reaching the height of 25 meters above ground, through a densely vegetated sculpture garden and landscaped extension of the green below. Designed to subtly and skillfully mimic the microclimates of valleys and hills, the lower levels is like a conventional park with mature trees, while the higher Levels have shrubs and grassland. All the plants are native to Hong Kong and southern China.

At the heart of the station is the enormous central void. This 45-metre-tall large void is mainly illuminated by diffuse daylight from the roof. Yet, The solar energy gain is minimized by horizontal shading panels. On the west, the station is protected from direct sunlight penetration and solar glare by the trees planted along pedestrian paths and stairs in the civic plaza.

The vast atrium hall space rises upwards to a sweeping curved roof. This is key to the passive energy performance of the station, with cool air sinking to its lower levels. The station acquires a thermal stratification energy saving strategy with cool air being supplied from the floor which allows tempered air to reach up to humans' height, so as to achieve thermal comfort and energy saving at the same time. The balustrade on each level of the atrium acts as a physical barrier to separate cool and warm air. In addition, the enormous void is sunken 20-meter below ground which can benefit from the earth coupling cooling strategy.
