Oxigeno - The Jerde Partnership / Cuestamoras Urbanismo is an entry in the Mixed Use category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

There is a well-known saying that echoes throughout Costa Rica: “Pura Vida.” It’s an emotion, an attitude, it’s happiness, and a way of life. And so, to truly be successful, the region’s largest new commercial development needed not just to attract visitors, but it needed to fully capture Pura Vida.

The project delivers a new concept of a Human Playground that bridges retail, entertainment, sports, culture, education and gastronomy. More than just a shopping center or lifestyle center, Oxígeno is a dynamic extension of the local community. Since its opening in December 2018, Oxígeno has received more than 1.5 million visitors.

The unique form of Oxígeno was inspired by the many volcanoes surrounding the site. Additionally, the hovering clouds that sit on top of the mountains, the greenery, and the gently sloping hills of the surroundings were used as inspiration to create a project that reflects the natural beauty of Costa Rica. The project itself is divided into 5 worlds that complement each other: Live Out Loud, Explore New Sensations, Feel Inspiration, Be a Child Again, and Breathe the Essential; each of them feature a unique design, look, feel, and program, and are connected via pathways and a series of outdoor leisure and sports spaces, including the public park and green roof.

JERDE’s unique brand of experiential Placemaking design has created a unique public venue that will create memories and keep people coming back again and again.
