It’s the place where Muslim community gathers and interacts together, as well as with other local society members. In the Community Islamic Center different kind of; educational, cultural, entertainment and other services spaces designed to serve the local community in general and to the Muslim society in Berlin in specific. The center supports its local community by offering an arena of dialogue with the other to build bridges and to strengthen social bonds among the different components of German local society.
The Concept is based on the courtyard as main function space/element in the Islamic Architecture. The courtyard is the “spine” space for all the entities/departments within the designed community center. Each department has its own courtyard. Nevertheless, the courtyards were vertically stacked to suite the multi stories structure form. Also, all these metaphoric “vertical courtyards” are rotating starting from the top to be aligned with street and existing neighboring buildings direction. where at the base it revolves around 20 degrees to align the Mosque space toward Mecca.
The revolving motion is keen in the Islamic culture as it can be seen in masses rotation around the KAABA as well as in the Whirling spiritual dance.
As result, this building is an abstract representation of community center tracing the nearby context, but it looks up to its inspirational direction toward Mecca.
