Architect Ilan Pivko has unveiled an art-influenced design in homage to the Bauhaus.

The Cubist-influenced design is a boutique five-star hotel and luxury residences overlooking Tel Aviv’s cosmopolitan port district. The design keys into the city’s rich cultural history as a beacon for Bauhaus, the iconic school of modernist design that celebrates its centenary next year.

Tel Aviv is often named ‘The White City’ after its 4,000 buildings of Bauhaus design, originally built in the 1930s and now a World Heritage Site. The city has the highest number of Bauhaus buildings anywhere in the world.

Pivko, whose design focuses on a strong silhouette and draws inspiration from Cubist artists such as Picasso and Georges Braque, said: “Port Tel Aviv is my way of paying homage to the city’s Bauhaus history, an architecture I greatly admire, and bringing it to a modern, international level. The White City is reimagined in my design in a very universal and fluid way.”

His bold, white design comprises a 44-room five-star boutique hotel on the first and second floors, with the top seven floors delivering 39 one- to four-bedroom apartments and two five-bedroom penthouses, each with a rooftop deck and swimming pool on the tenth level.

A seamless integration of swimming pools pushes technical innovation to new levels. Meanwhile a lobby designed to create gallery-like spaces will show exclusive art exhibitions for residents and guests. A mosaic-like façade created from brise soleil shielded panels and open glazed areas echoes the functionality of Bauhaus form. The most valuable penthouse apartments will cost up to $17,056,180 (£13,298,703).

Port Tel Aviv is a collaboration with housebuilder Hagag Brothers. Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Port Tel Aviv, Lee Ziv said, “Port Tel Aviv will become Tel Aviv’s icon so it was important to work with such a world-renowned and respected architect.”

Ilan Pivko Architects is planning to open its first  New York office next year and is renowned for innovation with designs such as the Garden Tower and Florentin Tower in Israel as well as work in eastern Europe.
