Winner Spotlight: Future Street

Jo Smit
Thursday 06 Dec 2018

How will our streets look and function in the future? To give people a better idea, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) commissioned Place Design Group to come up with a vision for Sydney’s Alfred Street. The ideas were showcased for three days only in Sydney as part of AILA’s 2017 International Festival last October. But Place Design Group’s vision has won global recognition with the inaugural Best Immersive Use of Tech Award in the World Architecture News Awards 2018, which were celebrated in London last month.

The initiative was a major showcase involving a range of partners, including the Internet of Things Alliance Australia and Smart Cities Council Australia/New Zealand. Development of the vision began with research looking at potential future technologies and approaches.

The resulting design embedded green and smart infrastructure alongside emerging principles of complete and future streets, in five distinct street sections. Four of these were represented physically: Street of Today, Green Street, Complete Street and Smart Street. One – the Street of the Future – was a virtual reality (VR) experience giving visitors the chance to engage with a vision for 2037.

The 50 metre long street included 30 mature street trees, 100 tonnes of soil and technologies from Tesla cars and autonomous shuttles to vertical farms. Place Design Group’s 3D visualisation team created the VR version, which showed the street with such innovations as hover cars, drones, stacked racks of shared bicycles and floating hologram advertising. “Great use of immersive technologies to increase awareness of a project,” the WAN awards judges said of the winner. “This gained national exposure and reached and engaged with more people in a fundamental and supportive way.”

Future Street is among an international line-up of projects celebrated in the WAN Awards 2018. The awards highlight excellence in current and future projects, as well as the application of new technologies and architecture’s rising stars.
