PriestmanGoode has brought a first class airline cabin aesthetic to the budget hotel room with its latest project in the UK. It has created a compact budget hotel room concept for hospitality group Whitbread, and the first hotel featuring the rooms is set to open early next year in Cardiff. The ZIP by Premier Inn concept provides a room that is less than half the size of a standard room, at around 8.5 square metres, and has such features as lightboxes and flexible bed formats designed-in. The new brand has been developed in partnership with Wolff Olins, while JCS Design has developed the interior spaces.
The first hotel in Cardiff will have 138 rooms, and will be followed by a 140-room hotel in Southampton, for which the site has been secured. The company expects to roll out the concept to a range of buildings in towns and cities across the UK.
Whitbread chief executive Alison Brittain said of its innovation, “We believe there is a niche in an under-served market for ZIP. It offers us an exciting new platform for growth and will give us access to a broader customer base, attracting those guests who are on a particularly tight budget.”
