HOK has completed its transformation of the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, home of NBA basketball team the Atlanta Hawks, and the team this week played their first regular season home game there. The $192.5 million makeover honours Atlanta’s culture, embraces southern hospitality and elevates the venue experience. The upgrading of the 17,000 seat capacity venue, which is nearly 20 years old, has introduced new seating and socialising options, local restaurant concepts and new technology.
The arena’s 360-degree concourses have been redesigned to serve as active hubs linking new seating neighbourhoods featuring restaurants and an enhanced retail offer. Atlanta craftsmanship is on display throughout the arena, with warm wood detailing, intricate tile work and eclectic materials and textures.
The design removed an existing wall of suites that had spanned four levels on the arena’s west side, repurposing this space as viewing terraces, multi-level connections and a series of suites. The removal of walls to create a more social and connected arena experience required the installation of a roof truss spanning some 173 feet.
Integrated technology includes a new centre-hung scoreboard immersing fans in the action, HD screens and 400 network access points for ultra-fast internet service.
Ryan Gedney, senior design principal for HOK’s sports + recreation + entertainment practice, said of the project, “The arena is one of the city’s most valuable assets and the design is true to Atlanta in every aspect - from the concept behind the renovation to the materials, details and textures incorporated throughout.”
Design and construction of the phased upgrading was completed in just over a year.
