Heneghan Peng Architects design was chosen by an expert judging panel, who viewed the shortlist of six entries in detail before selecting their winner. This year’s jury, chosen for their expertise in this sector, were: Simon Erridge, Director at Bennetts Associates, Keb Garavito Bruhn, Founding Partner at Pilbrow & Partners, Carmen Pereira, Associate Partner at Mecanoo architecten and Suzi Winstanley, Associate at Penoyre & Prasad.
The judges applauded the winning design for its clear, innovative and effective response to an unusual client brief, together with its challenge to the traditional civic building typology.
“It's so well integrated into its context. IIt hasn’t done that big box thing that we’ve seen so often, it's managed to make quite a beautiful and delicate form that you can read at this high level that we’re looking at it, but also when you’re stood next to it. In terms of how it affects its local community, it's obviously a huge cultural, historical and political thing, so the complexity of the brief because of that, is really high.” Suzi Winstanley
“This is the most remarkable stair I have ever come across. It's really striking isn't it?” Keb Garavito Bruhn
“The project merges sympathetically into the landscape. It's expression is simultaneously one of pride and modesty.” Carmen Pereira
“I love the way that this sits within the landscape.“ Simon Erridge
