Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture’s design was selected by our expert jury panel, who viewed a shortlist of six entries before choosing the overall winning design. This year’s judges, chosen for their experience and expertise in this sector were: Sarah Brown, Director at TateHindle, Benedict Tranel, Principal at Gensler, Ian Bogle, Founder at Bogle Architects and Chris Brandon, Managing Principal at Perkins + Will.
“I think this project is really quite interesting, it's a different solution to quite a difficult problem. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill’s hotel form is shaped with cutbacks and punctured and enclosed within an external cuboid mesh. I particularly like the way the building will appear very differently between day and night. The transparent exterior façade exposes the interior forms that are themselves a reflection of the interior organisation. A good winning scheme.” Chris Brandon
“The design of the scheme is comprehensive in its thought process to detail and layout planning, whilst original in the overall concept. The outer frame set 10 metres away from the two towers forms a transparent grid to aid the environmental performance of the buildings, and gives a layered aesthetic to the facade design. The interventions carved into the form create semi-external spaces at various heights - terraces and garden spaces which are a welcome introduction to what would otherwise be a repetitive floor plate. Sharing facilities throughout the building breaks down the mass and gives ‘local’ amenities to different areas of the building. The detailed layouts have been carefully derived, allowing the room and suite sizes to be planned into the grid.” Sarah Brown
“An interesting approach that ties together the different programmes while creating unique opportunities for spatial experiences and programmes to occur in the carved out areas of the massing.” Benedict Tranel
“This proposal addresses a number of the environmental issues of the climate in a delightful manner.” Ian Bogle
