Khosla Associates design was selected by our expert judging panel, who recently viewed the shortlist of six entries in depth before selecting this year’s overall winner. This year’s jury, chosen for their expertise in this field, were: Olga Gomez, Director at Squire and Partners, John Hemsworth, Founder and Lead Designer at Hemsworth Architecture, Heinz Richardson, Director at Jestico + Whiles, Mark Smyth, Associate at The Manser Practice and Carl Turner, Founding Director of Carl Turner Architects. The judges celebrated the winning design for its elegant and effective response to the context, together with the subtle and timeless aspects for this building typology.
“This is a great house. The location and what they’re trying to do in this part of India in a very contemporary way, it seems to engage with where it is. It’s elegantly detailed, this one edges it for me” Heinz Richardson
“The roof height and shape, sort of echoes the mountains around it. It’s subtle and it feels quite timeless. It could have almost been built by Corbusier in the 50’s or 60’s, but yet it feels unique and rooted in the context.” Carl Turner
“There’s something very intriguing about this project. It’s a very nice diagram and I love the stone. It’s very modern, but it also has something quite local. It feels like it could never be out of date, that it’s timeless.” Olga Gomez
“They’ve got the colour palette just perfect, the materials are beautiful. The patchwork stone here it looks amazing. I just think that there’s something really beautiful about how the tones reflect.” Mark Smyth
We’d like to take the opportunity to thank not only the jury, but all who entered their projects into this year’s WAN House of the Year Award 2017 .
