Wednesday 28 Feb 2018

The Judith Poole Sports Hall, a magnificent project by Allen Jack+Cottier wins the WAN Sport in Architecture Award 2017

We are thrilled to congratulate Allen Jack+Cottier, winners of the WAN Sport in Architecture Award 2017 with their well considered design of The Judith Poole Sports Hall.

Championed by an expert jury, this design stood out as the winner from the six shortlisted projects. This year’s exceptional jury panel were: Rasti Bartek, Partner at Cundall, Matthew Birchall, Global Sports Sector Director at BuroHappold Engineering, Bill Crockett, Senior Vice President | Regional Leader, Sports + Recreation + Entertainment, HOK, and Tom Jones, Senior Principal at Populous. The judges felt the scheme was particularly well managed and the scale was just right in its context.

Jury Quotes

“Masterfully sited to mitigate the height and mass of the large volume spaces. The roof and structural form are original, climate-responsive and altogether form a powerfully dramatic expression very appropriate to the function and image of such a private school.” Bill Crockett

“Sports halls are so often black boxes, but here the quality, control, shaping, natural light and fantastic detail - it has everything! It’s got a functional shell that really adds quality too.” Tom Jones

“I love it, it’s so well considered. It really stands out against all the other projects’" Matthew Birchall

“Fantastic use of light, it’s beautiful” Rasti Bartek

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank the jury, and all who entered their projects into this year’s WAN Sport in Architecture Award 2017
