Pascall+Watson have collaborated with Jean Nouvel, to create the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will open to the public on Saturday 11 November.
As Executive Architects since 2009, the P+W teams in Abu Dhabi and London have developed the detailed design, specifications for construction and the production of an intricate Revit 3D model used as a tool by the wider design and engineering teams.
Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of a series of galleries and museums on Saadiyat Island and will house artworks from around the world, with a universal focus on shared human stories across civilisations and cultures.
The design consists of a series of connected gallery spaces totalling 8,000 sq m, surrounded by seawater and largely covered by a vast 180m diameter domed roof, supported on four piers.
The dome which is inspired by the cupola, a distinctive feature in Arabic architecture, has seemingly random geometric openings that cast fragmented light into the circulation spaces below, suggestive of dappled light filtering through a traditional interlaced palm leaf roof.
