Six innovative practices selected for the Practice of the Year Award shortlist

We are delighted to host the first ever WAN Practice of the Year Award 2017 this year. Our distinguished panel of industry experts were looking for evidence of sustained innovation and originality across a spectrum of sectors. Architects were invited to submit examples of their work for assessment by a distinguished panel of leading international architects and prominent figures from the world of design and development.

This year’s jury, chosen for their expertise within this sector were: Louis Becker, Principal Partner and Design Director at Henning Larsen Architects, Nicholas Garrison, Partner at FXFOWLE, and Eva Jiricna, Founder of Eva Jiricna Architects.

The six shortlisted projects in no particular order:

Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt, London + Hampshire

“They have not got a large portfolio but it is balanced by an enthusiasm and inventiveness and ability to reach the highest targets. I am sure they will be moving up in a very near future.” Eva Jiricna

“Strong concepts. Fine execution.” Louis Becker

“Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt is a practice that creates beautiful and well-executed buildings, often on tight budgets.” This is a practice to watch!” Nicholas Garrison

LMN Architects, Seattle, WA

‘The variety of projects show a great deal of proficiency and ability to create public spaces, master architectural complexity of different character and control the process of delivering what was originally offered.” Eva Jiricna

“LMN is precisely the kind of practice that this category is made for. It literally practices ‘excellence’ “ Nicholas Garrison

“The practice has demonstrated a fine balance between designing robust schemes with refined details. Spatially, their project seems quite convincing.” Louis Becker

Touloukian Touloukian Inc, Boston, MA

“Touloukian Touloukian practices a clear and compelling design ethos that spans across project types and scales. The design ideas are deeply thought through” Nicholas Garrison

“In terms of importance, it has to be said that big architectural statements are as important as small urban/community concerned architectural contributions which form a part of people's everyday life. There is usually a very limited budget when it comes to small buildings and a huge ambition to serve a variety of purposes. The examples of the firm are showing environmentally friendly structures in different parts of the built environment and it is hard to judge how successful or not they are.” Eva Jiricna

“Interesting designs. High quality. Great sensibility to materials. Poetic approach.” Louis Becker

ODA New York

“ODA is onto something great: their approach to design and cities is intriguing and bold-spirited. They seem to relish and take great pride in their abilities to subvert conventions for urban developments. It is a practice to watch as many of the projects are under construction.” Nicholas Garrison

“It is hard not to be impressed by this young practice for its energy, effort and philosophy backing their design. They show remarkable variations in type of the buildings which they are presenting and also the competence to reach the high quality of the concept” Eva Jiricna

“Clarity of the design and the design detail. They need as much applause as encouragement.Talented designers, fresh approach.” Louis Becker

CetraRuddy Architecture, New York

“Good designers with a broad portfolio.” Louis Becker

“CetraRuddy is a practice that achieves high design results at a number of scales and project types.  At the scale of the city, One Madison is a clever and well-executed modern obelisk, juxtaposed with the MetLife campanile. At the scale of the campus, the Choice School solution is a very interesting response to Southern India's tropical climate.” Nicholas Garrison

“A very impressive portfolio giving evidence of the practice’s ability to deal with any design category with utmost competence. There are examples of new development in the centre of the city, a conversion of an existing building, a school which respects beautifully the local architecture and gives kids the wonderful environment to absorb what an architect can do for them. There is a competence to bring all the architectural disciplines including environmental design together in beautiful harmony.” Eva Jiricna

Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors, Melbourne

“Rob Mills Architecture designs beautiful residences that are extensions of their sites, and attentive to the needs of the client. They all exhibit an unabashed dedication to a rather traditional modernism: Le Corbusier would be honored by the many references which have all been skillfully rendered.” Nicholas Garrison

“I fully appreciate the competence, professional attitude, concept and detailed perfection.” Eva Jiricna

“Very skilled designer. Limited palette. Great houses.” Louis Becker
