With the advancement of technology, movie screening in cinemas has been digitalized, piles of film reels are no longer stacked up in screening rooms. In the olden days, screening rooms in cinemas were crammed with flat round metal boxes, where numerous films are stored. The designers used these film reel boxes as the theme of this cinema design, signifying numerous classics we have all enjoyed. The theme is illustrated through the round shape of film reel boxes, creating an impactful and modernistic movie-viewing environment.

As the audience enter the lobby, they will be struck by round plates arranged all across the ceiling. Film reel boxes are portrayed as huge round plates with 2.8 meter diameter, which are linked carefully by designers, jointly form an enormous and powerful ceiling feature. These plates are arranged to overlap each other closely, and are placed in various heights. The wood pattern and the lighting effect together create an illusion that these plates are constantly moving. The plates are aluminium panels painted with wood patterns, wood pattern enhances the 3D effect and adds texture to the flat aluminium panels.

The designers adopted earth tone as the main colour scheme for this project, creating a mild and warm atmosphere in the lobby. Stones in 2 different shades of brown are used on the floor, these long stone stripes align with the round plate ceiling feature, the darker stones are shadows these plates cast on the floor, adding a sense of movement to the ceiling feature.

The plates next to the ticket counter descends to the ground, not only does it add variety to the ceiling feature, but also becomes part of the decoration in this area, subtly separating the ticket counter from the rest of the lobby. The stone counters at the concession area are specially designed with smooth edges, matching with the fluid outline of “film reel boxes”.

Before the movie begins, the audience can relax themselves at the rest area, take a seat and enjoy some snacks. The ceiling feature in the lobby extends all the way to the rest area. Earth tone is also adopted in the rest area, sofas and coffee tables are in dark green, presenting a sense of elegance and calmness. Apart from the comfortable big sofas, the designers have also placed stools at the rest area, customers can group the stools and tables according to their needs and gather with their family or friends. Loose furniture in the rest area are round and have smooth edges, echoing with the round plates in the ceiling feature.

The theme of film reel boxes is also evident in auditoriums. The ceiling and walls are all covered with small brown discs made from sound absorbing panels, echoing with the ceiling feature in the lobby. The discs seem to be flying towards the audience from everywhere, creating a sense of speed and excitement. Pattern on the carpet merges the 2 main elements of the lobby design, simple lines outline the ceiling feature and stone floor. The chairs and carpets are in 2 shades of brown and green, creating a sense of consistency in the color scheme of the cinema.
