A concert hall designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro following an international architectural competition win is due to open in Moscow in 2018.
According to the Architectural Council of Moscow the new concert hall will be positioned in Zaryadye Park in the centre of Moscow. It will seat 1450-1550 and there will be also a rehearsal room where chamber concerts and recitals can be held with a capacity of up to 400 seats.
Commenting on the project Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov said: “A special feature of the concert hall are the facades, two of which will be located in an inclined terrain: the concert hall will be ‘dug into’ the hill; on the other side it will have a so-called ‘glass cover’: a transparent screen with wooden crosspieces, under which trees will grow. It will give an expressive silhouette to the building and shield not only the Philharmonic, but also the outdoor amphitheater from bad weather. The ‘cover’ will have solar panels. We are planning to open it in 2018”.
Director of the Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev went on to say: “Zaryadye Hall will have more unique opportunities for staging operas and ballets than the second stage of the Mariinsky Theatre built ten years ago. There is a bad practice — you build a philharmonic hall and then spend millions on improvement and updating. Instead we want to build a hall that will not need any improvements. It should become a perfect acoustic instrument that will touch the soul and the imagination of the audience once and for all. I really believe in its success”.
