Led by Gordon Affleck (Design Partner) and Miriam Auyeung (Project Director & Partner), 10 DESIGN has won an international competition against nine other international design firms for the second phase of a world class Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Centre in China (Zhuhai CEC). This phase will provide an additional new convention space, supported by office and retail components totalling 273,000 sq m. State owned Huafa Group anticipates construction to commence in Q4 2016.
Zhuhai CEC is strategically located on the Pearl Estuary with close proximity to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. The overall development comprises an approximate GFA of 980,000 sq m. It is designated as the central core of the new Shizimen Central Business District, which has a total investment of over RMB12bn. When Phase 2 is completed, it will further catalyse economic development, positioning the wider Hengqin region as Southern China’s primary financial centre.
Gordon Affleck said, “This exciting win allows us to enforce the development’s key concepts such as using public functions within the Urban Ribbon to link the city with the waterfront by framing and activating a grand public plaza while screening the more private functions of the convention and exhibition. The new convention component also extends the public space around the Urban Ribbon using a series of elevated terraces that form a number of layered courtyards and informal gardens, serving both public and convention facilities. Grand landscaped staircases link the terraces to an elevated plaza with views to the waterfront while creating covered connections between both the differing phases of the facility and between the city and the waterfront.”
