A mix of old and new

A home in Singapore that seamlessly blends its sheltered interior with its surrounding garden exterior

One of the entries for this year’s WAN Awards Adaptive Reuse Award, the brief required the team to retain the owner's 1950s childhood home, while modernising the space. The look of the house, with the top volume hanging over the bottom volume, was retained by ONG&ONG Pte Ltd while the layout was redesigned to incorporate features of modern tropical architecture.

The result is a home that seamlessly blends the spaces of its sheltered interior with its surrounding garden exterior. Additional floor space for more bedrooms was created through the new wing that closely follows the original structure, resulting in the successful amalgamation of the old and the new.

As the owner wanted future generations to live comfortably in the home, the house was reconfigured to meet modern living standards. The living area was raised to make the entire ground floor level; bedrooms were redesigned to incorporate ensuite bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes; natural ventilation was improved and the ambient temperature within the building was reduced.

The living spaces on the ground floor are kept cool, as they are lined by bodies of water on either side – the pond with islands of trees in the courtyard and the recreation pool facing the garden. The entire living and dining area has floor-to-ceiling glass windows that can be pulled back to create a completely open space that looks out into the courtyard and garden areas outside. The courtyard exists between the main road and the house, and is fenced with timber trellises to maintain privacy while facilitating cross ventilation.

On the upper floors there are motorised windows, which allow warm air to escape, and a balcony that stretches across the entire second floor. The balcony serves as a buffer zone where various ‘skins’, such as timber screens and glass windows, operate to shade the rooms, while allowing visual access to the outdoors.

WAN Awards Adaptive Reuse Award is now open for entries until 31st October 2015. Please click here for more details…
