From Six…to Two! Joint Winners of the WAN Temporary Spaces Award 2015 are Announced

Tuesday 07 Jul 2015

Contemporary, artisanal, evolving and innovative are the winning characteristics of the Temporary Spaces Award.

We are delighted to announce the first ever WAN Temporary Spaces Award 2015 has produced two very different winners, selected by our panel of experts in the field, including: Je Ahn, Founder at Studio Weave in the UK, Wolfgang Buttress, artist who conceived the UK pavilion at Milan Expo 2015, Pascal Wensink, Director at EPR architects in the UK who was judging remotely & Albert Williamson-Taylor, academic, prominent in engineering and academia from AKT II.

Our winners are:

SLA Architects with ‘Landscape to Contemporary Urban Development’ and Rojkind Arquitectos with their ‘Hybrid Hut’ – Huge congratulations to both firms for their exemplary work in the area of Temporary Space making.

Our panel wanted to award Hybrid Hut for its beautiful use of raw materials; elegantly constructed together to make the small but perfectly formed shelter that was part of the annual Warming Huts competition in Winnipeg, Canada.  The project was well received by all panellists, and stood out early on as a contender for the final spot. Albert Williamson-Taylor commented that they had used the engineering cleverly to “let the form of the hut help to create the shape of the geometry”.

Our jury were not content with just the one winner, and Je Ahn especially wanted to bring the work of SLA Architects forward to be considered worthy of a joint final place for good reason: “Nowadays masterplan is done on the desktop and then it gets just implemented and people suddenly have just to populate. But here people will see their house and where they’re going to live slowly emerging. It is place making rather than just space making.” And after some debate the jury decided that both project should be crowned winners, sending a broader message.

Congratulations to both practices, and of course our illustrious panel. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this diverse and hugely creative award.
The winners will be featured in a dedicated announcement coming out this weekend.
