One Embankment Place in London has relinquished the title of ‘The World’s Most Sustainable Office Building’ after Amsterdam’s The Edge achieved a BREEAM score of 98.36%. Designed by PLP Architecture for OVG Real Estate, The Edge is now occupied, with global professional services firm Deloitte as the lead tenant.
The BREEAM Outstanding building blends ‘green’ technology with design features that enhance the comfort, health and productivity of building users; a blend that was of great importance to Deloitte.
Coen van Oostrom, Founder and CEO of OVG, explains: “Deloitte always strives for the best and the building we developed for them reflects this. We brought together a team of experts and challenged them to identify new innovations to make The Edge one of the most efficient commercial properties in the world, built with and for Deloitte, the primary occupier. This collaborative approach was the reason that this building achieved such a high rating.”
Design elements that enabled the energy neutral project to achieve such a high BREEAM score include: 4,100 sq m of rooftop solar panels; solar panels on areas of the south façade not occupied by windows; and aquifer thermal energy storage to generate all energy for heating and cooling.
This is also the first development to use Philips’ Ethernet-powered LED connecting lighting. This system enables employees to control the lighting and climate at their desk area using a smart phone; the system therefore provides data about the energy usage of the building.
Ron Bakker, Founding Partner at London-based PLP Architecture which designed The Edge said: "The shape and orientation of the building present the initial step to achieving the exceptional climatic performance of this headquarters.
“Large floor plates arranged around a north-facing atrium allow daylight to permeate the majority of workspaces while load-bearing structure with smaller openings provides thermal mass and shade to the sunlit faces of the building. The 15-storey atrium space full of light and activity contributes to an inspirational workplace environment that is operationally, aesthetically and environmentally outstanding."
