Hawkins\\Brown and Studio Egret West join forces for 2.6 hectare mixed-use scheme

These renderings show a detailed planning submission by Studio Egret West and Hawkins\\Brown, the Stirling Prize nominated duo behind the Park Hill Estate in Sheffield, UK. This project is located in South Quay, London and blends 1,500 residential units with supporting community infrastructure such as education facilities and retail outlets.

Studio Egret West is acting as masterplanner and landscape architect for the development, with the design of the residential buildings split evenly between the two firms. Studio Egret West is leading on the three Millharbour West structures and Hawkins\\Brown is leading on the three Millharbour East buildings. The two firms have also split the remaining non-residential structures.

Lucas Lawrence, Associate Director at Studio Egret West explains: “This unified design approach has been reflected in the family of residential buildings above which, although each have their individual expression, work together to create a strong sense of place.

“The appearance of SEW’s proposals is defined by each buildings particular approach to the design of the winter gardens; double height, wrapping or deep enclosed amenity spaces become the expression of the buildings character.”

Aside from the residential units - 27% of which will be affordable, with 21% social rented and 6% intermediate tenure - the wider development will incorporate a state-run primary school at ground level plus restaurants, cafes and offices. Green spaces will permeate throughout with mature foliage and grassy expanses across the site. 

Greg Moss, Partner at Hawkins\\Brown furthers: “The proposals for Millharbour Village have been developed in close collaboration with Galliard Homes and have provided a unique opportunity to create a scheme with a real sense of place and cohesion of community. Working again with Studio Egret West has built upon the strength of our existing relationship and has allowed the benefits of genuine collaboration to be integrated to the design.”
