Cowan construction S/A issues 'regrets' as overpass collapses in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

An overpass located two miles from the Mineirao Stadium in the FIFA World Cup host city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil has collapsed onto heavy traffic. One person is confirmed to have died with reports of more than twenty people injured. Construction work on the bridge was yet to be completed.

Construtora Cowan S/A, the construction firm working on the bridge, released a statement noting that it ‘deeply regrets the incident’ and that it will offer the necessary support for the victims and their families. The firm has directed local teams to the site to aid rescuers and has initiated an investigation into the cause of the collapse. It is also providing shoring for a second nearby viaduct.

News company Reuters quoted local resident Leandro Brito as saying: “This is the incompetence of our authorities and our businesses. Because of the World Cup they sped everything up to finish faster. That’s why this tragedy has happened. They are not making things properly. Everyone is very angry.”
