The Interlace by OMA / Ole Scheeren named winner of CTBUH Urban Habitat Award

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has announced the winner of its inaugural Urban Habitat Award: The Interlace, Singapore by OMA / Ole Scheeren. The award was initiated this year to celebrate the positive impact that tall buildings can have on the wider urban environment, fostering a sense of community and providing a positive contribution to their locale that extends beyond the building envelope.

Speaking on the announcement, CTBUH Executive Director and 2014 awards juror Antony Wood said: “The Interlace is far beyond being just a worthy winner of the inaugural Urban Habitat Award. It demonstrates dramatically the real opportunity tall buildings have for creating quality urban space at height, if we can only break down our preconception of designing skyscrapers as stand-alone, unconnected icons.”

The Interlace is a 170,000 sq m development in Singapore which welcomed its first residents in late 2013. Designed by OMA / Ole Scheeren for CapitaLand Singapore and Hotel Properties Limited, the scheme involves 31 blocks of apartment units at 6 storeys tall and 70m long, stacked in hexagonal arrangements to create 8 large and permeable communal courtyards.

Incorporating low-impact passive energy strategies and designed using a series of site specific environmental studies including wind, solar and daylight analysis, the development has been awarded the Universal Design Mark Platinum Award and the Green Mark Gold Plus Award from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority.

Awards Jury Chair Jeanne Gang, Founding Principal of Studio Gang Architects said: “The Interlace creatively realise the potential a tropical environment provides for inverting the ‘towers in the park’ typology in favour of the tower as park. By integrating horizontal and vertical living frameworks, it becomes much more than the sum of its parts.”
