Nottingham Hub Station has recently fully re-opened to passengers following around 3 years of work by contractor Taylor Woodrow to both upgrade and refurbish the existing Grade 2* listed station, as well as constructing a new South Concourse building to the south-east of the station.
The station, located within walking distance of the city centre, has seen a remarkable transformation funded by Nottingham City Council (NCC), Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust. London-based architects, Pascall+Watson, working together with consultants WSP Group and Imtech G&H have developed design proposals originally prepared by BDP (on behalf of NCC in 2009), and have worked closely with Network Rail, East Midlands Trains and Nottingham City Council in ensuring that the existing station has been given a new lease of life.
A significant refurbishment of the entire station has been undertaken to upgrade the 100-year old buildings and platform areas and has included internal, external, and public realm works to all of the entrance, concourse and platform level buildings to sustainably bring back to life this important station that had perhaps been neglected in its maintenance over many years.
The major change that has taken place has been the enclosure of the 100m-long front entrance ‘Porte Cochere’ building to become a significant new contemporary passenger concourse space, This was previously an open taxi rank and passenger vehicle drop-off area.
New ticketing and retail facilities have been provided into the highly decorative and original ‘North and South Passenger Corridors’, which had largely become hidden over many years of development and which originally formed processional entry routes into the station environment.
With the new open, contemporary and spacious South Concourse building having been constructed to the south-east side of the station, linking the station directly with both a new multi-storey car park (designed by BDP) and the new extension to the Nottingham Tram line (which over sails the existing platform areas and is due to open in late 2014), the new and refurbished station buildings represent a significant transformation of this highly thought of listed station complex.
