Tadao Ando's first residential building project in New York: 152 Elizabeth Street in Nolita

Three images have been released of Tadao Ando’s designs for a condominium in Nolita, New York. The redevelopment project for high-end developers Sumaida + Khurana is located at 152 Elizabeth Street on the corner of Kenmare and Elizabeth Street and will see an existing building transformed into a luxury residential structure.

Sumaida + Khurana acquired the site in a $21m deal and brought Ando onto the project in March 2014. Gabellini Sheppard Associates will serve as Architect of Record and will work on the interior design.

The seven-storey building will be split into eight residential units with 2-5 bedrooms each. These apartments will range from 1,900 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft with customisable interiors throughout. A serene rooftop terrace graces the crown of the building.

“The renderings provide the first glimpse of the creating, which will incorporate components that are Ando hallmarks: poured-in-spot concrete, galvanized steel and voluminous glass.” said Sumaida + Khurana in a statement printed by Architonic.

“Ando has utilized these components in his most notable tasks which includes the Church of Light in Osaka, the not too long ago finished School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Monterrey and the Modern day Art Museum of Fort Worth.”

Construction is due to commence within the next few months with completion set for 2016.
