Snippets of information have been released about the new Cobb County Stadium of the Atlanta Braves. Late last year, the baseball team announced that they would be leaving their home at Turner Field and it has now been confirmed that Populous will be designing the team’s $672m stadium with The Jerde Partnership responsible for the masterplan. The 41,500-seat stadium is slated to open in 2017.
“This is a very early look at how our vision is shaping up and, even though we are still months away from final plans and drawings, we are very pleased with the progress,” said John Schuerholz, President of the Atlanta Braves. “The renderings represent the sense of place we intend to create 365 days a year in addition to a world-class ballpark.”
Reasons given by the Atlanta Braves for their relocation include the end of their lease at Turner Field in 2016 and the need for $150m of infrastructure redevelopment at the stadium, including replacement of seats and upgrading to lighting systems.
The club has therefore decided to construct a stadium and integrated mixed-used complex on 60 acres of acquired land in Cobb County with the club confirming that numerous transport connections are already in place. Retail, hotel and food & beverage outlets are all incorporated in the plan as the Atlanta Braves have committed to developing the remaining parcels in the vicinity of the stadium.
