It has been announced that a joint venture of Dutch firm UNStudio and local practice AD+RG is to complete the design and administration of the construction for the Lyric Theatre in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong. Designs will be unveiled in autumn 2014.
UNStudio / AD+RG Joint Venture said: “It is indeed a great honour for our two companies to join forces and be given this distinguished opportunity to contribute to the creation of one of the largest and best arts and cultural districts in the world. We will actively synergise our creativity, insight and experience, and produce a facility that Hong Kong and the world can be proud of.”
The development will be the third volume dedicated to the performing arts within the boundaries of West Kowloon Cultural District and, whilst its primary use is for dance performances, the facility will be used for a variety of performing arts events during the further development of the area.
The 1,200-seat Lyric Theatre will join the Bing Thom Architects and Ronald Lu & Partners-designed Xiqu Center and the M+ Museum by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells to provide high quality performances across a broad range of genres.
Chief Executive Officer of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Michael Lynch comments: “The design team for the Lyric Theatre is an excellent example of marrying global vision with local expertise.
"With this, our fifth venue unveiled in the past years, progress in the performing arts side of the West Kowloon Cultural District jumps forward. I am certain that they will create for us a world-class venue for the Hong Kong people and visitors from abroad.”
