Dongguan Leopards' new basketball stadium takes it cue from the sport, with net-like facade and orange hues throughout

German design practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have seen their design for a 14,730-seat basketball stadium in Dongguan, China come to life in recent months as the new home for the Dongguan Leopards finally reached completion. The 60,600 sq m stadium is located in the new district of Liaobu and is separated from the busy nearby thoroughfare by expansive landscaping.

gmp worked with local practice CABR and structural engineers schlaich bergermann and partners to create a new home for the Dongguan Leopards that would also act as a recognisable structure for the city, providing an orientation point and attraction that local residents can be proud of.

The inner workings of the stadium translate into the exterior form, with the circular ring that tops the structure reminiscent of a basketball hoop and the glass façade with its triangular panels resembling a net attached to this 'hoop'. Behind this insulated glazing is a solid wall sporting the same orange tone as the standard basketball, a hue which can also be found throughout the interior design.

This undulating steel ring that forms the top structural element of the roof has a diameter of 157m and acts as a support for 28 suspended ribbons upon which lattice frame structures are placed for bracing. Struts formed in a zigzag shape provide support for the roof area and the triangular panels with insulated glazing create a cable network façade between the roof and the ground in a feature that is unique to this project.
