New hub for industrial design in Mexico City planned by Zeller & Moye and FR-EE

Archivo is an exciting young initiative in Mexico City whose operations promote and exhibit top-level industrial design in the city to provide opportunities for learning and experiencing the arts. Currently based in an existing gallery space in Tacubaya, the organisation is keen to operate out of a stand-alone centre and is working with Zeller & Moye and FR-EE to design a new home.

Due to break ground later this year, Archivo’s new base is comprised of a series of transparent spaces arranged around a vertical core with floor plates that branch outwards to provide shade. The glass facades are stepped back from the slab edge, causing it to overhang and create terraces or social staircases.

Christoph Zeller and Ingrid Moye further: “Our design for Archivo represents a new building typology in Mexico City. The vertically stacked open floors full of life and activity connect the building with its surroundings, thereby challenging the trend for enclosed facades and stimulating an upcoming neighborhood through culture and exchange.”

The building will be situated in the heart of Mexico City in a verdant area and visitors will be encouraged to indulge in the luscious natural surroundings via the balconies or public roof terrace. Floor-to-ceiling glass in the galleries and event spaces enable additional scenic viewpoints. Spaces for social events, talks and commercial activities have been prioritised and plans include areas for workshops, dance classes and urban gardening.

“We are aiming to create the premier forum for contemporary design in Latin America, giving voice to young designers, creating dialogue and awareness about architecture and design in the region. Building upon how we approach projects at FR-EE and in Archivo's collaborative spirit, I wanted the new building to be designed in collaboration with other architects to create the ultimate platform and infrastructure around the collection' s activities,” explains Fernando Romero, Founder of FR-EE & Archivo.
